Far Cry 4 Out Today
Far Cry 4, the latest game in the Far Cry franchise, hit the shelves at midnight last night. ShackNews has a trailer of what the Season Pass has to offer, and don't forget you can buy one of the many PC versions from GAME :)

Goat Simulator MMO Patch
The developers behind Goat Simulator are bringing out a patch later this week that sees the game enter the world of MMO, with player classes, quests and levelling up.

Read more about this bonkers but entertaining game and the patch on ShackNews

Rainbow Six: Siege
A new game in Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 franchise was announced at E3 recently. A trailer featuring some in-game footage is available, and it looks very impressive. Thankfully, Ubisoft have retained the first person gameplay (unlike the latest dumbed-down Ghost Recon which went third person) but the key innovations will be around the destructive scenery.

Take a look at the Rainbow Six: Siege Trailer on ShackNews. The game isn't due for release until 2015.

Steam Overlays Fixed?
A Steam client update last week claims to have fixed some problems with game crashes related to the Steam overlay. Several games suffer issues with overlays (Steam, Xfire etc) and the workaround has always been to disable overlays. Hopefully this fix will remove the need to do this for Steam at least.

BobLAN 2014.1 Roundup
What a fantastic weekend that was! It was the first full weekend LAN party in over 18 months, and everyone was up for some serious gaming. Numbers were great, particularly on the Friday when we managed 7-a-side at one point. It was really pleasing to see some proper team play going on too, eg the CounterStrike games on de_vertigo.

There was a huge variety to the games we played too:
  • CS:GO
  • L4D2
  • Day of Defeat
  • Battlefield 3
  • Battlefield 1942
  • HalfLife 2 DM
  • QuakeWorld CTF
  • GRID
  • Rockband
As always, big thanks to Bob for hosting all of us again (if you haven't paid up yet, please do so). It was great to see so many people there, particularly those who travelled a long way to attend. It just shows how much everyone loves coming :)

BobLAN 2014.1 Day 1
The first full BobLAN in a while started yesterday, and for a setup night, there was plenty of decent gaming. Once we'd made sure all the servers were working (and had some tea), we settled down to some quality CS:GO.

Given that today is the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, we plan to play all the various flavours of the Omaha Beach map on the different FPS games that have featured it over the years.

BobLAN 2014.1 Imminent
Here's a reminder to all members that BobLAN 2014.1 starts tomorrow evening, running through to Sunday. Please make sure you have updated your gaming PCs before coming, to avoid overloading the internet connection as you catch up on the several GB of Steam game updates.

As always, you can follow the action on our dedicated BobLAN Page including constantly updating schedule and live webcam.

Far Cry 4
Still on the topic of franchise extensions, Ubisoft have unveiled details of the next iteration in the Far Cry series. Far Cry 4 will take place in the fictional Himalayan region of Kryat. Due for release in November 2014, you can keep up with information on Shacknews or preorder the PC Limited Edition at GAME

Wolfenstein - A History
Following on from the announcement of a new Wolfenstein game, Shacknews have put together a retrospective covering the whole Wolfenstein history, starting right back in 1981 with the 2D top-down shooter. It's come a long way :)

Age of Mythology Extended Out Now
As reported recently, an updated version of Age of Mythology has been in the pipeline. The game became available on the Steam Store yesterday for the princely sum of £22.99 (or £67.99 for a 4-pack). That does appear to be quite expensive for a makeover to a game from a decade ago.

CoD: Advanced Warfare
Activision have released details of the next instalment in the Call of Duty franchise. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is being developed by Sledgehammer Games (the developers behind MW3), and is due to hit the streets on 4th November 2014. Further details of the game, plus the reveal about Kevin Spacey's involvement, can be found on Shacknews

Wolfenstein: The New Order
The game that started it all 22 years ago, Wolfenstein, is back again courtesy of Bethesda. This time the story is set in the 1960's with the Nazis having won WWII. You can find plenty of videos, screenshots and articles covering BJ Blazkowicz's latest exploits on Shacknews

BobLAN 2014.1 Dates
After a gap of nearly 2 years, the dates for the next BobLAN have been announced. The LAN will take place from Thursday 5th June until Sunday 8th June. The usual LAN Party page and Forums Topic are up and available for use.

Age of Mythology Extended
Following on from the recent makeover given to Age of Empires II, it is Age of Mythology that's next to receive the treatment. An article on Eurogamer lists the PC requirements for the release which is due this May. There is also a short trailer showing the graphical enhancements and features of the game.

One of the key elements could be the Steam Workshop integration, which would mean easy access to community maps - great for LAN party use!

Steam Machines
Valve have released more details on their console offerings, known as Steam Machine. There will be at least 12 designs to choose from, varying greatly in price and spec.

The consoles will run SteamOS, which sits on top of Linux. It will also come with a bespoke Steam controller, optimised for the types of games hosted on Steam.

Here is the current list of manufacturors who will be building the first generation of Steam Machines:
  • Alienware
  • Alternate
  • CyberPowerPC
  • Digital Storm
  • Falcon NW
  • GigaByte
  • iBuyPower
  • Maingear
  • Materiel.net
  • Next Spa
  • Origin PC
  • Scan
  • Webhallen
  • Zotac
Full details can be found at Steampowered.com

CS:GO Gameplay Changes
A few changes were made to CS:GO gameplay earlier this week, particularly in relation to sound effects:
  • Changed C4 planting sounds - when planting the bomb, it plays an initialization sound that everyone can hear, but ONLY the player planting will hear the code typing sounds. This makes fake planting possible (similar to fake diffusing as a CT).
  • All items now follow the same pick up sound rules (grenades, C4, weapons, defuse kits, etc):
    • If a player picks up an item while running, it plays a pickup sound that everyone can hear.
    • If a player picks up an item while moving silently, it plays a subtle pickup sound to ONLY the player picking it up.

You can read the full change list on Steam News

Call of Duty: Ghosts
The latest game in the Call of Duty franchise became available for sale from midnight last night. This instalment has been developed by Infinity Ward, and early reviews point to some major changes in gameplay over previous versions.

I could go on to list them all here, but I think it would be best to simply point at a comprehensive review: IGN CoD: Ghosts Review

From a DFC perspective, the multiplayer and matchmaking experience should be smoother, and the co-op mode sounds to have much improved AI for your team mates and enemy bots. One to look forward to I think :)

Steam Family Sharing
Valve are due to start the beta of a new system which allows up to 10 authorised computers (eg those of family members) to borrow games you own in your library. Only one instance of a game can be played at a time, so this system can't be used to share the game for a multiplayer session.

It would be great for single player campaign games though, as once you have completed the game, you could let a family member have a go for no extra charge (including any DLC you may have purchased).

For more details, including how DLC, region restrictions and cheating are handled, see the Steam Family Sharing page on the Steam site.

CS:GO Chicken Changes
I was trawling back through the CS:GO update list, and spotted this one from a week ago:

Chicken changes based on pro feedback:
  • Reduced chicken sounds dBs and volume.
  • Reduced idle clucking rate.
  • Reduced range that scares chickens when running.

XBox One Launch Date
Microsoft have announced the release date for the XBox One - it will be available for retail on Friday 22nd November, one week prior to the PlayStation 4 launch.

The releases will bring the total of new consoles this year to three (the Android-based Ouya being the other one) and following the Wii U last year.
